Road trip to the Quiche
February 8, 2013
GuateRider organized a road trip from Antigua up to the Quiche area of Guatemala. We had an international team from Guatemala, El Salvador, Germany, Canada, and Australia. But first a day ride to Julios’s favorite breakfast place in the mountains for sausages.
For the Nebaj adventure we met up with Megan in Antigua riding her Kawasaki from Edmonton. Frank from Germany via Bolivia and Mozambique, came from Guatemala City and joined us in Tecpan for breakfast. He was representing team Yamaha.
Driving east on the CA-1 we stopped at the Mirador above Lago Atitlan for a photo op.
Continuing the ride west towards the Quiche Daniel got some great shots on the helmet cam. We stopped for a break in the city of Chichicastanango to visit the church and the market.
Mario and Victor from El Salvador joined us after we crossed the metal bridge in Sacapulus. Next the whole gang headed up into the mountains towards Nebaj. There was some pretty thick fog on the way.
We had a lunch stop in Nebaj before we rode up the dirt road to Acul.
Our home for the weekend was at the finca Mil Amores where they make the famous Queso de Chancol . The food here is served family style and there is lots of it!
This is the group minus Australia on Friday night. We awoke in the morning to some light rain and mist. Things did improve early in the day and so the guys went out riding.
Their first stop was in Chagjul for a boot shine before riding in the wet and mud! Again Daniel’s contour got some shots from the road.
The afternoon was sunny so we got out for a walk on the farm and into the village of Acul.
We must have been quite a sight, but we met a lot of friendly people. Stopping and visiting a corn mill we see how flour and tortillas are made. There was a party going on in town for the festival of the virgin of Candelaria . Read loud music all night.
Saturday we were joined by Trevor from Auatralia. Here is the gang on Saturday night for a dinner of Caldo de Gallina.
It had rained all night and continued to drizzle while Mario, Frank, and Victor headed out into the mud.
We all soon followed.
Everyone headed back to sacapulus, where Daniel and I continued west to the highlands of Chiantla and up to the Unicornio Azul in El Alfalfa.
We went for a hike in the hills.
Yes that says 8 degrees, which is the temperature inside the lodge too. There is a small fire in the lounge where we of course spent our time.
We headed back to Antigua for a farewell dinner with Julio and Luisa. We also met back up with our friend Orvar from Sweden.
