Bocas del Toro with the Chackos
May 7, 2013
On the Isla colon itself there is only 1 road to Bocas del Drago beach 15.5 km away so we headed out there and back before we could go to the hotel to check in.
The town itself is very touristy and there is a garbage collection dispute going on in town so it is strewn everywhere. The mayor announced this week that instead of 7$ per month the collection fee was 1.50 per bag. There are a lot of funky places to eat and drink. We loved the pollo rostizado place for sure.
The first day here we decided to get a water taxi to the nearby isla Carenero and walk around the island.
We had only gone about 20 minutes when it started to torrentially rain. We took cover for an hour, but it only got worse so we headed back towards the docks and got totally soaked. We even had to wring out our underwear.
After 2 days of rain the sun came out and we spent the day out on the water. We saw dolphins and then did some snorkeling. We also headed over to the famous red frog beach. There were some sloths hanging out by the dock.
We then made another attempt at a circuit of Carenero and with a few bits of bush whacking we made it. There were tons of Urchin shells and we collected some for Mark and Robin.
