Brasillia, DF to the border of Uruguay: 3000 plus km and 8 days to make it before the visas expire
Arriving back to Brasilia we were an hour late, but our friend Erick was there to meet us. His wife Danielle had also prepared a special meal for us. We are really hoping to connect with them when they are in Europe this summer.… Read the rest

The Rio Negro & Amazon part 2
After breakfast on our second day out we moved down river to visit an island that has an indigenous community. They were very friendly and the Chief welcomed us. His wife then showed us how they process the manioc or cassava they grow into Farofa (a toasted manioc and flour mixture that Brazilians eat with every meal and looks and tastes to us like sawdust) and Tapioca (cassava starch extracted and formed into flakes or balls).… Read the rest

The Rio Negro & Amazon part 1
Our 2 1/2 hour flight from Fortaleza to Manaus was at 10 pm and we landed and were finally at the hotel at 1 am.
The hotel has an amazing view of the Rio Negro, which is the largest left tributary of the Amazon, is the largest blackwater river in the world, and one of the world’s ten largest rivers by outflow.… Read the rest

Calvacantes & Chapada dos Veadeiros
Today was just about making miles and we booked it 470 km west on the BA 242 to Berreiras. We found a decent hotel and hid from the heat.
Today we planned another 425 km west and then south to Calvacantes near the National Park Chapada dos Veadeiros.… Read the rest

Chapada Diamantina part 2
We had asked about the route directly from Lencois to Andarai, which is 33 km off road instead of going around on the paved road 85 km. We were told it was a very bad road and so of course we had to do it.… Read the rest

Lencois & Chapada Diamantina part 1
Time to get off the coast and back to the mountains and Lencois in 417 km. We drove west and a bit north to Feira de Santana, which will mark the northern limit of our riding in Brazil. Dan was making sure the spot was on the “spot”.… Read the rest

Salvador de Bahia
We got up today to pouring rain despite it being bright and sunny outside, only in Brazil. But unlike Vancouver where this would last for days here it usually lasts less than 30 minutes.
We planned to go up the coast to the “ferry boat” to Salvador.… Read the rest

Porto Seguro & Itacare
We did not have far to go today at only 230 km to Porto Seguro, but it still took almost 4 hours due to rain and long lines of trucks to pass. We did get lucky a few times with road repairs and were able to get to the front of the long lines before the traffic was allowed to go in our direction.… Read the rest
