Back to Bolivia if the road is not blocked again!
Leaving Chivay we headed back over the pass to 4800+ m and back to the highway northeast to Puno in 284 km. This route is also over a second pass to 4500 m. The view of the city and lake Titicaca are stunning
We stayed in the same hotel and ate at the same good Chinese restaurant.… Read the rest

Arequipa & Colca Canyon
We planned for another mega day today of 588 km on the Pan Americana. It is at least scenic south of Nazca and curves along the seaside and then inland to Arequipa.
There was an amazing amount of truck traffic. The last 50 km into Arequipa took over an hour and then the entry to the city from the south is totally blocked so you have to detour 10 km to the north entry to access the historic center.… Read the rest

North to Caraz
After 2 days where our schedule had been decimated by weather, construction, and road conditions we were bagged and hoping for an easy day. Not so for ADV riders. After actually not a bad night sleep we decided to get an early start and were out the door at 720 and headed 45 min to Huancayo for breakfast and gas.… Read the rest
North to the mountains of Peru
Finally its time to leave the big city for the 1500 + km trip north to the Canyon del Pato, for what is supposed to be the number 1 day ride in all of South America…..
Starting out from Cusco at 8 am we had plans for a big day (500 km), but ended up with only 297 km on what was probable the worst day of the trip so far.… Read the rest

Machu Picchu
Today we were up at 500 am to catch a taxi the 25 min to the train station at Poroy. The train we had was a vista dome and so is mostly widows and a glass roof.
It is an almost 4 hour trip to go 100 km on this narrow (3 ft wide) gauge rail.… Read the rest

Cusco Peru
Before leaving town we went to a local auto lavado to get the layer of mud cleaned off the bikes. They have never been so clean. They did an amazing job.
The next order of business after crappy Bolivian gas was to find some better octane fuel.… Read the rest

Back across the border to Puno Peru
Buying gas here in Bolivia can be stressful since we have had people tell us they have been denied gas. It is true that the price of gas is highly subsidized here and so the price for the locals is low.… Read the rest

Peru Part 2
Arriving after 400 km to just outside of Chiclayo we found a hotel run by an Englishman and his Peruvian wife. This town however looks like you are in a mad max film. There are falling down brick buildings, wires everywhere, and garbage.… Read the rest
